The following information is being provided to ensure Lorain City School District students, their families, our staff and community members have accurate information regarding their rights and responsibilities regarding immigration and deportation issues. It is our sincere hope that this information eases any concerns by those who have joined our district after leaving their home countries.- The policy of the Lorain City Schools Board of Education and our CEO Greg Ring is that no federal agents will be allowed to enter any school buildings for any purpose unless and until accompanied by a Central Office administrator and the Head of Safety
- If the parent and/or student do not speak English, a bilingual staff member will be present to make sure both the parent and student are fully aware of their rights as well as what proceedings are taking place.
- Where possible the District will also ask the Lorain Police Department to be present to confirm that any federal authorities who present themselves at a Lorain City School District facility have the proper credentials and paperwork.
- Except in an emergency, the Federal officials will be asked to remain outside of the building until all confirmations are made. At no time will uniformed agents be allowed to conduct searches of any school facility. If some action is necessary it will be undertaken by a school resource officer or appropriate administrator.
- When a student is in a District building during school hours or activities, the District has custody of that child and is responsible for the safety and well being of the child.
- The District’s job is to educate and keep safe the children in its care. Only a parent or authorized custodian or guardian of the child is allowed to remove a child from the District’s custody.
- The school district is not an arm of the federal government, nor is it responsible for enforcing immigration laws or orders. Any staff member who violates this policy is subject to discipline.
Why are we sharing this information now?
Last week two U.S. Border Patrol agents in plain clothes were at one of our schools accompanying the parent of one of our students on a legal matter.
Since that time, misinformation about the incident has been shared online and via word of mouth, causing confusion and anxiety in our schools.
The following information is being shared to ease concerns, and to reinforce that our priority is the safety of our students and their families:- In accordance with policy, the parent arrived at the school during school hours to withdraw the child from school.
- The two Border Patrol agents were in plain clothes to reduce attention to the visit. Both agents did produce proper identification.
- The school principal followed District policy and immediately identified Central Office.
- A teacher familiar to the student accompanied the student to the parent before leaving the building.
- At no time did any agents of the federal government enter a classroom, nor conduct any kind of search.
- No uniformed personnel were ever in the building.
The Lorain City Schools Board of Education and CEO want to assure students, parents and staff that all laws and policies were followed. At no time did any representative of the District assist or participate in any investigation or arrest - the District merely allowed a parent to take a child out of school for a family matter.

El distrito escolar no es un brazo del gobierno federal, ni es responsable de hacer cumplir las leyes u órdenes de inmigración. Cualquier miembro del personal que viole esta política está sujeto a medidas disciplinarias.
¿Por qué estamos compartiendo esta información ahora?
La semana pasada, dos agentes de la Patrulla Fronteriza de EE. UU. Vestidos de civil estaban en una de nuestras escuelas acompañando a los padres de uno de nuestros estudiantes en un asunto legal.
Desde entonces, la información errónea sobre el incidente se ha compartido en línea y de boca en boca, causando confusión y ansiedad en nuestras escuelas.
La siguiente información se comparte para aliviar las preocupaciones y para reforzar que nuestra prioridad es la seguridad de nuestros estudiantes y sus familias:

De acuerdo con la política, el padre llegó a la escuela durante el horario escolar para retirar al niño de la escuela.
•
Los dos agentes de la Patrulla Fronteriza estaban vestidos de civil para reducir la atención a la visita. Ambos agentes produjeron una identificación adecuada.
•
El director de la escuela siguió la política del Distrito e inmediatamente identificó la Oficina Central.
•
Un maestro familiarizado con el estudiante acompañó al alumno a los padres antes de abandonar el edificio.
•
En ningún momento ningún agente del gobierno federal ingresó a un salón ni realizó ningún tipo de búsqueda.
•
No había personal uniformado en el edificio.
La Junta de Educación y el CEO de las Escuelas de la Ciudad de Lorain quieren asegurar a los estudiantes, padres y personal que se siguieron todas las leyes y políticas. En ningún momento ningún representante del Distrito ayudó o participó en ninguna investigación o arresto; el Distrito simplemente permitió que un padre sacara a un niño de la escuela por un asunto familiar.
