CAREER EXPLORATION STARTS EARLY WITH CTE TOURS

Students tour architectural lab

NOVEMBER 18, 2022 | Gage Romero, a fifth-grade student at Helen Steiner Rice Elementary School, has some ideas about what he could pursue as a career when he gets older: automotive service technician or restaurant owner.

Lucky for Gage, he and his classmates recently were able to tour the Career & Technical Education pathway labs at Lorain High School, where culinary arts and automotive technology maintenance and light repair are just two of 14 CTE programs available in Lorain City Schools.

This school year, CTE at Lorain High is opening its doors to all elementary and middle school students for building tours to initiate the “What do I want to be when I grow up?” conversation through career exploration.

“We want to improve the perception our students and families might have about manufacturing and trade/labor careers,” shared Christa Lokiec, Career and Technical Education and Work-Based Learning Coordinator. “Our tours allow us to showcase our CTE program and pathways to elementary and middle school students, their families, and the community to recruit and retain CTE students and, ultimately, grow our program to serve even more students.”

From welding to robotics, Lorain High’s CTE pathway labs allow for hands-on instruction that leads to credentials in leading industries and careers.

Helen Steiner Rice fifth-grader Logan Kannard said his favorite pathway lab was Sports Health and Fitness. Lorain High students demonstrated how to wrap sports injuries, which Logan thought was cool.

“I want to help people in need and help them feel better,” he shared.

Tours are planned well into February, so if your child has not seen what Lorain High has to offer, they will soon!
