LCS Guide to the 2024 Total Solar Eclipse

March 8, 2024

Hey Titan Families,

Get ready to witness a celestial spectacle!

On April 8, 2024, a total solar eclipse will sweep across the skies, and Lorain is at the heart of the action! While it falls during our Spring Break, we're not letting this cosmic event slip by without making it an unforgettable experience for our families.

Thanks to the incredible support from Nordon Corp., the US National Science Foundation, and the STEM Funders Network, we've secured solar eclipse glasses just for you! These glasses are the key to safely viewing the sun as it disappears behind the moon. It's like having your own front-row seat to one of nature's greatest shows!

Here's how you can make the most of this astronomical event:

Parking and bathrooms: Families, we want you to know that our buildings will be closed on Monday, April 8, 2024, but if you need restroom facilities, they will be available while you are in the community view the eclipse at Stevan Dohanos Elementary School, Longfellow Middle School, and Lorain High School, where Loraiin Police will be stationed. There is no overnight or long-term parking at any of the buildings.

Learn More: Ohio will experience a once-in-a-lifetime total solar eclipse on April 8, 2024. Solar eclipses occur when the path of the moon crosses directly in front of the sun. Many parts of the state will be in total darkness for a few minutes during the mid-afternoon. The remainder of the state will see the sun at least 95% blocked by the moon. The last time any location in Ohio had this type of eclipse was in 1806, making this a novel experience for most Ohioans. Being in the path of this eclipse provides a unique learning opportunity for our students.

Yes, We Are Getting Glasses: Look for your child's safe solar viewing glasses, which will soon arrive at their school before Spring Break. Each pair ensures a secure view of the eclipse.

Create Your Eclipse Zone: Set up a cozy viewing spot in your backyard or balcony. Bring out blankets, chairs, and snacks to make it a comfy affair for the whole family. Or, check out one of the local viewing events planned. More info is HERE!

Learn Together: National Geographic has produced a Solar Eclipse 101 video that describes the different types of solar eclipses and tips for viewing.

Capture the Moment: Grab your cameras and phones to document this historic event. Share your photos and experiences with us on social media using #LCSEclipse2024. Let's create a digital scrapbook of memories!

Stay Safe: Never look directly at the sun without proper eye protection, especially during an eclipse. Use your solar eclipse glasses at all times when viewing the event. The entire eclipse process takes place over several hours on Monday, April 8, with a short totality in the middle of the event. Partial phases of any eclipse can only be safely viewed with specialized eye protection. MORE DETAILS HERE!

Did You know? After the total solar eclipse on April 8, 2024, the next total solar eclipse that can be seen from the contiguous United States will be on August 23, 2044.

So, mark your calendars and get ready to be awestruck! Together, let's make this total solar eclipse a day to remember.
