CONTINUING TO SERVE STUDENTS, FAMILIES & OUR COMMUNITY: A Message from CEO Greg Ring April 22, 2020

Dear Titan Community,

As you know, Ohio Governor Mike DeWine announced this week that Ohio’s schools would remain closed for the 2019-2020 school year. While we are saddened by this news and miss our students greatly, we know that this decision was not made lightly. The safety of our students, staff and families is the top priority, especially at this time.

As a result of this decision, the Lorain City Schools will continue to provide home learning opportunities through the end of the school year. Instruction will continue as it has since April 6th, with @Home Learning Paths mailed home to students in grades PreK - 8, and online learning provided to our students in grades 9 - 12.

Please note that the grading policy at Lorain High School has been changed to Pass/Fail for the Fourth Quarter. Additional details will be shared soon.

I have been so impressed by the level of engagement our students have shown during this very challenging time, and I want to emphasize that it is more important than ever that our students participate and stay engaged in their classes.

There are a number of important updates coming though at this time, especially at the high school level. Our lives are changing swiftly, but the LCS staff is doing an excellent job adjusting course to ensure our students and families have what they need.

Please remember that if you or your child needs support, we are here for you. Please contact your child’s teacher or building principal for help with school work, getting supports for your family, or just to stay connected after being away from school for so long. Communication is very important at this time, and we would love to hear from you.

Stay healthy, and we’ll continue to share updates as they develop.

Thanks,

Greg Ring, CEO
Lorain City Schools

TITAN COMMUNITY SHEDS LIGHT ON THE CLASS OF 2020

On Monday, April 20, 2020 at 20:20 hours (8:20 p.m.) Lorain City Schools and districts across the state celebrated the Class of 2020 by turning on stadium and porch lights for 20 minutes and 20 seconds.

Thank you to all who participated to make our Seniors feel so special and supported by their community! If you want your photo included on the Class of 2020 web page please forward it to [email protected]

CELEBRATING OUR SENIORS

Our students have been amazingly resilient throughout the extended school closure, balancing not only the continuation of their learning from home, but many also serving as essential workers in our community, and/or providing care for their siblings while their parents work or are ill. And while this time of year is usually filled with awards ceremonies, celebrations and other rites of passage, instead, their days are filled with uncertainty, and the loneliness that accompanies a seemingly unending quarantine.

The Lorain City Schools community is known for its ability to come together in support of our students, and this is no exception. Plans are underway to celebrate our Seniors in true Lorain Titan style - with opportunities to participate to be shared soon.

At the same time, we are working with our students to learn what would be most impactful for them. If we cannot hold a graduation ceremony or prom in person due to physical distancing orders, what alternatives would be special for them? Holding these same ceremonies at a later date? Performing them in alternate ways? We can’t wait to hear what they have in mind, and will share with you as soon as we know.

Additional information for the Class of 2020 can be found here.

GETTING STUDENTS CONNECTED

Thank you to our phenomenal staff for making hundreds of phone calls and home visits to connect high school seniors with laptops and Wi-Fi hot spots to ensure they are on course to graduate this Spring. Approximately 150 devices were distributed through these efforts. Does your home need technology to support @Home Learning? Click here for discounts being offered in our area

HIGH SCHOOL GRADING POLICY CHANGE
Lorain High School has changed its grading policy to provide additional supports to students during this unprecedented time in our lives. As such, Fourth Quarter grades for high schoolers will be assigned as either Pass or Fail, to align with all other grade levels.

I want to thank our high school teachers and administrators for working together on this new model under such a short timeline. There is no handbook for what we’re experiencing right now, and decisions such as this reflect a real commitment to adjusting to the realities of our current circumstances, and the needs of our students. As a reminder, the last day of the 4th quarter for all students in grades 9-12 is May 20, 2020.
